Job Description

The Center for Maritime Strategy (CMS) seeks a Senior National Security Advisor to join its team of researchers working on maritime, defense, and foreign policy issues. CMS is the only maritime-focused think tank in Washington, D.C. and produces policy-relevant research on all issues relating to the sea services, trade, the commercial shipping and shipbuilding industries, and global maritime issues. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with an attention to detail who can take ownership of existing projects, collaborate well with the CMS team, and develop their own contributions to the Center’s research agenda and programming.

Desired experience: 7-15 years in public policy, government, or academic roles working on issues related U.S. national security/foreign policy and maritime affairs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Managing the Center’s research portfolio, including authoring and contributing to ongoing long-form research reports
  • Conducting research and regularly publishing short and long form writing on maritime issues, sea power, national security, and international affairs
  • Editing The Maritime Operations Center (MOC), CMS’s biweekly publication on maritime issues and foreign policy
  • Assisting in the planning and execution of CMS flagship conferences and other public policy events
  • Maintaining and building relationships with government officials, on Capitol Hill, and across the D.C. think tank community and representing the Center to public audiences
  • Assisting in CMS business development and fundraising efforts
  • Maintaining and building relationships with CMS’s corporate sponsors and philanthropic donors

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in history, political science, international relations, maritime studies/ocean sciences, or another relevant field
  • Post-graduate degree(s) desirable but not required
  • Demonstrated expertise in maritime issues, U.S. foreign policy and national security issues, and related fields
  • Exceptional writing, research, and editing skills
  • Experience working on and/or managing a large-scale research project desirable but not required
  • Experience working with the think tank/policy research community, on Capitol Hill, the military, and/or with the U.S. government executive branch
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
